What is an electric bike?
Generally speaking, e-bikes are bicycles with a battery-powered boost that comes via pedalling and, in some cases, a throttle. When you push the pedals on a pedal-assist e-bike, a small motor engages and gives you a boost, so you can zip up hills and cruise over difficult terrain without exhausting yourself.
Also known as ‘pedelecs’, they feel just like conventional bikes to ride, but better. They are a healthier, greener and more convenient transport option and they make cycling more accessible to everyone.
How do electric bikes work?
There are 3 main components which separate them from push bikes: the battery, the motor and the sensor. All electric bikes will have these components to enable their rider to promote their pedalling power.
When you push on the pedals with a pedal-assist ebike, you will engage your motor which will drive the wheels as well and assist you while riding. Your battery will provide the power for your bike and the sensor will tell your motor that you have begun pedalling so that it can provide assistance.
You will use the ebike’s display to check the battery level, alter the assistance level and watch your speed. The components will all work together to provide you with a seamless and enjoyable ride experience.
What are the different types of electric bikes?

Are electric bikes legal in the UK?
Yes, electrically assisted pedal cycles (aka. EAPCs) are motorised but they are not classed in the same category as motorbikes so anyone over the age of 14 can ride one legally in the UK.
The current UK legislation states that ebike motors must be a maximum of 250W and an assisted speed limit of 15.5 mph to be classed as an EAPC.
You do not need a licence, insurance, MOT or tax and you can ride them wherever you can ride a standard push bike.
Can you ride an electric bike in the rain?
Yes, absolutely. E-bikes are designed to handle rain and splashes from puddles so that you can ride comfortably in the knowledge that you are not damaging your bike. You’ll be even more comfortable if you’re wearing a waterproof!
