At Pedal & Chain, we highly value inclusion. We want to do our bit to break the current lack of diversity and inclusion seen across the cycling industry. At the time of writing, over 64% of the UK adult population is over the weight that is the regular warranty limit on a bike. These numbers highlight the under representation of bikes catered for heavier riders. To ensure that we can serve people of all shapes and sizes, we have put together a list of electric bikes that are perfect for larger riders. Knaap pushes hard on suitability for larger and heavier weight riders Winner of the 2021 BikeBiz Innovation and Newcomer Award, Steven May, has begun a mission to highlight the lack of inclusion across the cycling industry for larger and heavier weight riders after attending this years EuroBike. May, of distributor JDM Products says “Over 33,000 trade visitors passed the Knaap stand at EuroBike and there wasn’t a single person over 14 stone that we saw, let alone larger. This got me thinking and none of the industry advocates for cycling are over that weight either.” Both of Knaap Bikes models, the AMS (non-suspension) and the RTD (full suspension) are designed for 2 riders or equally one larger one and can accommodate up to 28 stone/180kg on their 20x4 wheeled, road legal, pedal assist ebikes with over 80Nm of power for their 36/21/756 Samsung battery. After returning to the UK, May started reaching out to industry leaders to highlight the lack of inclusion in their stores and was staggered by the huge gap in the market for solutions for heavier riders. “These were the very same people, under-represented in the industry, totally unserved by the available product range, and not shown in almost any images of cycling, let alone on a bike designed for them.” explained May. Over 64% of the UK adult population is over the weight that is the. Regular warranty limit on a bike in the industry, this means that if there was a bike that could provide a solution it’s total available market is more than DOUBLE the current cycling industry target audience. From surveying over 350 bike shops, the Knaap team discovered that there really aren’t many solutions for larger riders and decided to do something about it. Many of the bike shops questions responded that when a larger or heavier weight customer comes through the door that they don’t have any solution for them. May highlighted “These are the very same customers that the government wants to promote health, wellbeing, and fitness to, but they are totally underserved by product in the industry until now. Our aim with Knaap Bikes, is to provide supercool looking, pedal assist eBikes that are designed for comfort and weight of riders, allowing them to enjoy all of the benefits that cycling offers. For a larger person to walk through the doors of a bike shop it’s quite a challenging first step. As an industry we need to have a solution in the store to make it a welcoming environment for larger riders. We need to start by getting images out there of larger riders on bikes that have been designed for them and then build an advocacy program that is completely inclusive May added “Having reached out to numerous larger riders who have written articles, without exception, all of them highlighted the apathy and lack of interest given by the industry in response to what they have highlighted. We are now looking to work with more larger riders and the shops that support them, to help raise the profile of this issue, advocate change and provide a real solution throughout the UK.” To ensure that we can serve people of all shapes and sizes, we have put together a list of electric bikes Shop our range now - Best Electric Bikes For Heavy Riders
